This extraordinary race covers 1000 miles of the roughest and most breathtaking terrain that Mother Nature has to offer. Mushers and their dog teams face challenges such as jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra, and miles of windswept coast. The extreme conditions of temperatures far below zero, intense winds, restricted visibility, overflow hazards, long hours of darkness, and treacherous climbs make the Iditarod a truly unique race that is only possible in Alaska.

The race begins in Anchorage in south central Alaska and concludes in Nome on the western coast of the Bering Sea. This event has earned the title of "The Last Great Race on Earth®" and has garnered worldwide recognition and interest. It is not just a sled dog race; it is a competition between extraordinary men and women from diverse backgrounds. Competing mushers come from various professions such as fishermen, lawyers, doctors, miners, artists, as well as individuals representing different nationalities including Canadians, Swiss, French, and native Alaskans. Each participant has their own inspiring story and motivations for taking part in this challenging journey.

Hundreds of dedicated volunteers contribute their time and effort to organize and execute this remarkable event. Men and women of all ages including students and residents from local villages assist in various roles such as managing headquarters in Wasilla, Anchorage, and Nome. They assist with logistics such as transporting volunteers, veterinarians, dog food, and supplies. They serve as checkers, coordinators, and offer support to the families of each musher who compete.

The Iditarod Trail Committee's mission is to promote and preserve the historic Iditarod Trail, primarily through the annual staging of a sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. The Iditarod Trail, now recognized as a National Historic Trail, originally served as a mail and supply route, and later became a vital lifeline during an epidemic in Nome. Spanning over 1,150 miles of diverse terrain, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race has rightfully earned its title as "The Last Great Race on Earth".
